Yes, tee time brokering is occurring at City municipal golf course as well as other public golf courses throughout the region.
Brokering of tee times is a long standing issue. When the City has been made aware of unpermitted tee time brokering, it has taken action to cancel associated tee times and suspend associated player card accounts.
According to the City’s golf reservation management system vendor, website security measures have already been put in place to identify suspicious web traffic and mitigate bots and other computer programs used to advantage tee time brokers.
It appears that tee time brokers are booking tee times as they regularly become available to the public, advertising these tee times, selling these tee times for an additional fee, and then cancelling and immediately re-booking the the times under the names of individuals who paid the additional fees. Due to the large volume of regularly and legitimately cancelled tee times within the golf reservation system, it is difficult to identify this unpermitted tee time reselling or how many tee times are actually being booked for the purpose of being resold.
While unpermitted golf tee time brokering may be contributing to the difficulty in booking tee times, the challenges of reserving tee times would likely exist regardless of unpermitted tee time brokering due to the extremely high demand for tee times at City courses. Additionally, the practice of groups holding onto multiple tee times for several days while they determine which tee times suits their group also contributes to the difficulty in obtaining a tee time.
The National Golf Foundation recently identified Southern California as the most golf starved market of the continental United States. The most golfers chasing the fewest amount of golf holes.
The City has put in place a non-refundable deposit for all golf tee time reservations to deter unpermitted tee time reselling and to reduce the volume of booked and cancelled tee times across its municipal courses. The City also adopted updated Rules, Regulations and Code of Conduct to clarify that tee time brokering is strictly prohibited and that violations of the Rules, Regulations and Code of Conduct is punishable as a misdemeanor under Los Angeles Municipal Code Sections 63.55(G) and (R), and 11.00(M).
A $10 per person non-refundable deposit is required for all tee time reservations at the time of booking, and this amount will be credited towards each golfer’s green fee upon check-in. Your deposit will be forfeited if you cancel your tee time for any reason (note: the separate $10 per person no-show/short-show penalties also remain in effect). A refund of your deposit may be issued if a course is closed due to adverse weather and/or other course closure events or if electric carts are not available for rent preventing you or your group from playing.
No, but you can “move” your tee time to another available time slot. Go to your pending reservation in your account. Click the little clock icon to the left of your pending reservation. As long as you’re not within the 24 hours of your tee time, you can search for a different time or day at the same course and move your tee time without losing your deposit and possibly avoid additional no-show penalties.
